Turkey Chili

This one is great for a meal right when you make it, but will also freeze really well for future meals when you don’t feel like cooking.

Cook time:  45 minutes hands on, 3-9 hours total (depending on preferred simmer method)
Servings:  24

Ingredients:

  • 20 ounces ground turkey
  • 19.4 ounces sweet Italian turkey sausage
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans chili beans
  • 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 3 bell peppers (any color) seeded and chopped
  • 3 stalks of celery, chopped
  • 3 medium carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and finely chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 slices of bacon, uncooked and cut into small pieces
  • 2 cubes beef bouillon
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 16 ounces shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 16 ounces light sour cream or plain Greek yogurt (optional)
  • 16 ounces tortilla chips (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot crumble the ground turkey and turkey sausage and cook over medium high heat until evenly browned.
  2. Drain excess fat and liquid
  3. Add the chili beans, diced tomatoes, and tomato paste
  4. Stir in onion, bell peppers, celery, carrots, jalapeño pepper, garlic, and bacon pieces
  5. Add beef bouillon, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, turmeric, cumin, hot sauce, basil, salt black pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika and sugar, mix well.
  6. Bring mixture to a boil.
  7. Reduce heat and allow to simmer for 2-3 hours, or transfer to a large crockpot and heat on low for 4-8 hours.
  8. Remove from heat and allow to stand for 20 minutes
  9. Serve with shredded cheddar, sour cream or Greek yogurt, and tortilla chips.
